If you are the only parent in a household, you can't be two places at once. While you want to spend time with your kids, there are likely times where they'll be unsupervised. Yet, even if you can't be with your kids every second, you can keep an eye on them from a distance. Let's talk about some ways to track the kids even when you are not in the room.
Parents must keep their kids safe. There are always practical steps you can take to make safety adjustments to the home.
Step One: Set Ground Rules
From an early age, your children should know what's right and what's wrong at home. It's fine to let your children explore their own world. However, it's not appropriate to allow them to expose themselves to harm.
Your children should know where not to go in the home. For example, they should not go into a basement that contains power tools. They should know what items not to touch, such as lighters, outlets or scissors.
Establish when your kids must ask permissions to use certain items or go certain places. Though they might not heed your rules (kids are kids, after all), you'll at least establish a foundation. Keep in mind that you might need safety materials at home, especially if you have young children. These might include video monitors, cabinet fasteners and door locks.
Step Two: Keep An Eye On The Kids
Knowing where your kids are doesn't mean you must police them. Simply being aware of what they are doing can help you keep an eye on them.
Require the kids to let you know if they plan to go out in the yard or leave the house. Ask them, without being accusatory, what they're doing. Listen for the kids as they move around the house. Watch out for sounds, movements or activities that appear out of the ordinary.
Ask the kids to check in with you every so often. Make sure you know where they are going and what they are doing. Make sure they know when you expect them home.
Step Three: Get An Emergency Plan
It's imperative that your kids know what to do in an emergency. They should know when to come get you. They should have your cell phone number, address and landline memorized. Make sure they know when to call 9-1-1. You never know when something might happen to you that makes your kids become your lifeline. They need to have the skills to spring into action.
Creating a safe home environment for your kids doesn't take much. Still, it does require effort, so don't hesitate to set rules and expectations for everyone to follow. If you want to learn more about how your insurance policy can protect home security, contact a Kasky Insurance agent today.
